Each box has a number, 1 through 32, corresponding to its position on the
patch panel in the rack.  Each position has two jacks, corresponding to the
two jacks on the box.  There are four rows of eight of these positions
across the rack, for a total of 32 positions and 64 jacks.  Most box numbers
are written in the lower right corner of the face of the box, or in large
numbers on the side of the box.

Network boxes are deep and have two network jacks in the bottom row.
(Shallow boxes have phone lines, and no network.)  Each jack on the box has
a number, and typically the number of the first jack is written across the
top of the box.  So if it says "3144-07" and has two jacks then the jacks
would be 3144-07 and 3144-08.  In the rack, the number of the jack on the
left is often used, so what's written on the box doesn't match what's on the
rack.  For this reason, we try to use box numbers instead of jack numbers.
